Cinema
With about one hundred cinemas located in the city, with most films
in English and Turkish sub-titles (check beforehand), one can enjoy
all the fun of Hollywood in comfort. The Beyoglu district is the
most popular choice for the cinema goer.
Theatre
Growing in popularity, theatre in Istanbul is really taking off
and places like the Istanbul State Theatre Company and Taksim Shanesi
and the AKM are full of famous and contemporary creations. More
alternative productions are held at the Istanbul Sanat Merkezi.
Art Galleries
Beyoglu is full of galleries full of all sorts of local and international
works. The banks are also starting to have art galleries open
for the public. The Aksanat Art Centre, Garanti Art Gallery and
the Borusan Culture and Art Centres are excellent to start off.
Live Music
Uncovered outdoor settings like the Cemal Toplu uncovered Amphitheatre
in Harbiye, Park Orman in Maslak and other places like the local
football stadiums host the likes of Massive Attack, Sting, Bjork,
etc to the music- loving locals.
Bars like the Kamanci, Jazz Stop, Mojo, and the Hayal Kahvesi
specialise in rock and heavy metal. The Shaman has all the international
music tastes, and Gramofon caters for the Jazz lovers as well as
the Q Jazz Club near the Ciragan Palace.
The likes of Ben Harper, Zydeco Twisters, John Zorn and Trans
Global Underground have all played at the Roxy and it is quite
popular where you might have to queue to get in here. Its also
part of the Jazz Festival venues that cater to the local and
international Jazz players.
