There is always something happening and one can keep oneself occupied
24/7 in this city. Festivals are common the whole way through Spring
and Summer. The Istanbul Film Festival starts in April, with the
Theatre and Music festivals beginning in May, and right after this
is the Bosphorus Festival in June. Jazz festival is in July and
the Rumeli Hisari Concerts take place in July and August, and if
you think thats bad, the Dance and Techno festival kicks off in
September. The local bars and cafes are a good place to get information
for all the goings on in the city, and they will put up posters
around the city to promote all these great festivals.
Shopping for Antiques: Tombak II, Beyoglu
This place is located just behind the Galatasaray LycEe and is
the place for bargain hunting when it comes to antiques. From 100
year old bars of soap to 1930Õs European razors to silver
tea cups, and plates etc, as well as 100 year old toys. Dig deep
enough and you might just find a real bargain.
Old Bedesten (at the Grand Bazaar)
This place is a just a cluster of small stores that sell antiques
located in the Grand Bazaar in Beyazit. Soviet Union religious
icons and effigys are on sale here. Silver ornaments and jewellery
as well as Ottoman watches with arabic numerals are on sale here.
Bargain with the locals and have a guestimate of what you will
pay for the product and stick by it. Haggle and donÕt
give in until you are somewhat near your guestimate price.
