The Domabahce Palace and the Ciragan Palace are both located in Besiktas. Walk to the fortress of Rumeli Hisari which looks onto the Bosphorus, go shopping in the Grand Bazaar, chill out around the Hippodrome, Sogukcesme street and Gulhane or lie out in Yildiz park. Go mosque watching - the Suleymaniye Mosque, Ortakoy Mosque and the Fatih Mosque are picturesque. The Beylerbeyi Palace and the KizKulesi are located on the Asian side.

Walking around Istanbul is the best way of seeing the city. If one breaks the stroll down into sections, its easy enough to get around. The old city is the most interesting (Sultanahmet). A wealth of history awaits you here. Also the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus shoreline are treasure troves full of historical areas. Beyolgu deserves its own tour or Old Pera as well. The Bosphorus would make an ideal boat trip as well as the Princes Islands. Some excursions out of town are also important to look into.
