Fast food has a bad name in European terms as being called junk
food, but here in Istanbul it means pre cooked and wholesome. For
example pre cooded stews and vegetable dishes can be seen in shop
windows. Fine fast food shops are the Pudding Shop in Sultanahmet,
which was the first of these type of shops in Istanbul. Visit the
Altin Kupa nearby, or the A La Turka and Bol Kepce in Ortakoy, which
are all very popular. Daruzziyafe near the Suleymaniye Mosque serves
the real thing and Ela and Ficcin in Beyoglu have great variety.
Street Food
Midnight snacks are all the craze on the street where someone wheelin
a cart can sell you stuffed mussels, or even a fried mussel sandwich,
meat balls, filled pancakes (favourite lunchtime snack) along
with Lahmacun (paper thin lamb pizza). Baked potatoes or rice
with chicken is also on sale throughout the day. Breakfast is
bread rings with sesame seeds, cheese/potato filled pastries,
cracker bread snacks, popcorn and all sorts of sweets dipped
in all flavours of dripping syrup.
