Istanbul is the melting pot of both local and world cuisine in
recent years. Their cooking highlights the flavour of the main ingredient
rather than covering everything in sauces and spices. One can also
expect regional variations with a lot of the local dishes. Although
Turkish fare is still the most popular, international restaurants
are sprouting up all the time. There is not much point in going
to Turkey and not experiencing their exotic dishes.
The Meyhane (traditional pub) is also worth a look, and they are
to be found all over the city. Vegetarians are also catered for
throughout the city.
FISH
Fish is sold all over the city, even in the local small pubs (Meyhanes).
They would eat the fish with meze as well as the local Ôaniseed
liquourÕ Yeni Raki. Kumpaki is swarming full of over-priced
meyhanes, which line the streets and the little known ÔBalikAi
Sabahattin in Sultanahmet is worth a visit. Along the European
Bosphorus shore are also good restaurants like Marina Balik Restaurant
on the docks in Jurucesme, Rumeli Iskele beside the fortress,
and Yeni Kaptan Restaurant in Arnavutkoy, and the Beylerbeyi,
the Angel Fish, and Deniz Restaurants on the Asian side.
